The Official Chart Hitz NZ Chart:
Best Of 2002 Singles Chart Top 50
This year's Best Of Singles Chart is based on a points system where every single chart released during the year counted towards the final Best Of 2002 Singles Chart. Each time a song made the chart between: numbers fifty and thirty-one, ten points were added to it's total; numbers thirty and eleven, twenty points were added to it's total; numbers ten and one, thirty points were added to it's total. This was used to reward those songs which had staying power in the chart but may not have necessarily reached the upper limits of the chart.
For each songs individual position in the weekly chart, number one was given fifty points, number two forty-nine points, and so on, with number fifty being given one point. Then all weeks results were collated together and the results are displayed below with the total number of points each song accrued during the year.
For information on what the asterisk(*) and hash(#) symbols mean, see the notes below the chart.

Best TV Chart Show - New Zealand
This year saw The Pepsi Chart opened up to a wider audience with the addition of a Saturday afternoon rescreening on TV4's sister station TV3. This undoubtedly helped The Pepsi Chart's success in this category by displacing last year's winner Coca-Cola Chart Show (and doing it by quite a substantial margin.)
Support for Coca-Cola RTR dwindled this year and only just beat m2 Volume: Top 12@1 to the number three spot. This is possibly due to the heavy product placement throughout the half-hour show. At least Pepsi does this in a more subtle manner.

Best TV Chart Show - International
With only one entrant for this category it was hard for it to lose.
At least it deserves to win for it's Award Show, Christmas Show and it's weekly shows.
Congratulations Top Of The Pops!
Take note, TV executives: Give us more international Chart Shows!!!

Best Music Related TV Show
Most Wanted was, once again, the clear winner here. Bribing people to watch the show, once again, paid off for them, but we feel they didn't need to do this as it is already a top quality show. Also with TV3 now having dedicated screenings of Most Wanted plus using it to fill in gaps when programs are running too early is a real bonus.

Best Concert/Performance (Within New Zealand)
With so many artists coming to New Zealand this year, this category was quite a crowded bunch.
This year's winner was the Rumba concert which was held at the end of November in Auckland and throughout Australia (with a differing line-up.) There was a mixture of both Kiwi and international artists including Abs, Nesian Mystik, P!NK, Taxiride, Toya and many more. Our only critcism of Rumba was that the majority of the artists/groups performed for only approximately fifteen minutes each.
Big Day Out '02 was once again a huge success and Big Day Out '03 is set to be even bigger. 2003 is the ninth year that the BDO concert will have been held in New Zealand and each year it has become progressively stronger.

Best Newcomer
After securing their first number one with their second single, "It's On", Nesian Mystik were always hot favourites to take out the Best Newcomer award.
Avril Lavigne was also a strong performer after the success of her debut, "Complicated", and the follow up "Sk8er Boi".
Also worthy of a mention is DJ Sammy who remixed the 1980s hit "Heaven" to become one of the best dance tracks of the year and followed it up with another remix, this time being "Boys Of Summer".

Best New Zealand Artist/Group
After taking out the Best Concert/Performance award last year, Zed have this year won the award for Best New Zealand Artist/Group in this new category. It was a welcome return for Zed fans this year as the boys released a new single, "Starlight", which grabbed the Christmas #1 spot.
It's also been a great year for K'Lee with four hit singles off her debut album and getting international attention on various magazine covers.

2002 has been a great year for Westlife with six top 20 singles ("When You're Looking Like That", "Queen Of My Heart", "World Of Our Own", "Bop Bop Baby", "Unbreakable", and "Written In The Stars".) It's hardly surprising that they took out three of the top ten positions in the Best Of 2002 Singles Chart.
Blue also had a great year after the success of their singles "Too Close", "If You Come Back", "Fly By II", "Best In Me", "One Love/Get Ready", and "Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word (feat. Elton John)", with "Fly By II" being the top single of 2002.

Best Album - New Zealand
Three hit singles from Nesian Mystik ("Nesian Style", "It's On" and "For The People") have helped make 'Polysaturated' a must-have for any pop/RnB music lover.
Natures Best 2, a collection of the songs voted 31 to 65 in Apra's poll of all time favorite Kiwi compositions, filled the gap in every Kiwi music lover's collection. With artists ranging from DD Smash to Zed, Natures Best 2 is a classic New Zealand compilation.

He's the person that so many parents love to hate which just makes the kids like him even more. 'The Eminem Show' was destined to be a success story after it was in mass distribution across P2P (peer-to-peer) networks worldwide before it was even released. With smash hit singles like "Without Me" and "Cleanin' Out My Closet", Eminem could do no wrong this year.
'Unbreakable' is a must-have for all Westlife fans as it packs in all of the group's hits including the new single of the same name.
'Make It Good', while not a strong performer, it does contain a few good tracks like the #1 smash "Caught In The Middle" and the follow up "Make It Good". A1 are now "taking a break" so their fanbase which has grown significantly here in New Zealand over the last year will be sadly disappointed.

Chart Hitz NZ Commentary:
Firstly, let's look back at how we did with our predictions for 2002.
The possible demise of Britney Spears as the Princess of Pop
- In 2002 Britney hit rock bottom with the singles "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman" and "Boys".
Nelly Furtado going from strength to strength
- The only thing that came out of the Nelly Furtado camp this year was "S*** On The Radio (Remember The Days)". We were disappointed that there was only three hit singles from her debut 'Whoa Nelly!'.
Even more local music making the Top 50
- 2002 was a great year for New Zealand music with the following singles making the #1 spot: "Bruce" by Rubicon, "Sophie" by Goodshirt, "Falling In Love Again" by Anika Moa, "It's On" by Nesian Mystik, and "Starlight" by Zed.
Yet more "individual comebacks" from the Spice Girls
- We were completely wrong with this one (some would say, thank goodness.)
The first full year of Chart Hitz New Zealand Chart
- September saw in the first year of charting New Zealand's hottest hits, with the 2002 Christmas Chart ending the first full year of the Chart Hitz New Zealand Top 50 Chart. We hope this will be the first year of many.
In 2003 look out for:
Christina Aguilera's return to form
A bigger and better Rumba
Yet even more Kiwi music making the Top 50
More local acts going international
Another full year of Chart Hitz New Zealand charts
Anything else we've missed
