The Official Chart Hitz NZ Chart:
Best Of 2003 Singles Chart Top 50

Girls And Boys - GOOD CHARLOTTEThis year's Best Of Singles Chart is based on a points system where every single chart released during the year counted towards the final Best Of 2003 Singles Chart.  Each time a song made the chart between: numbers fifty and thirty-one, ten points were added to it's total; numbers thirty and eleven, twenty points were added to it's total; numbers ten and one, thirty points were added to it's total.  This was used to reward those songs which had staying power in the chart but may not have necessarily reached the upper limits of the chart.
For each songs individual position in the weekly chart, number one was given fifty points, number two forty-nine points, and so on, with number fifty being given one point.  Then all weeks results were collated together and the results are displayed below with the total number of points each song accrued during the year.
For an explanation on what the hash(#) symbols mean, see the notes below the chart.

The Official Chart Hitz NZ Chart:
Best TV Chart Show - New Zealand

TV2, home to Coca-Cola Chart Show2004 was a mixed year for the TV3 network.  First we saw the demise of The Pepsi Chart (last year's winner of this category, slipped to number four this year) and then there was the birth of C4.  Unfortunately (for TV3), dumping a winner such as The Pepsi Chart has ultimately resulted in the 2001 winner of this category reclaiming the top honours.
  1. Coca-Cola Chart Show (TV2)
  2. The Edge Chart (C4)
  3. Coca-Cola RTR (TV2)

The Official Chart Hitz NZ Chart:
Best TV Chart Show - International

Top Of The PopsOnce again, as the only entrant in this category it was hard for it to lose.
Towards the end of 2003 TOTP was improved upon when 'all new Top Of The Pops' was launched.  It was a significant update to the format of the show which saw a single (new) host, so much hype from artists featuring in the chart and more exclusives than you can shake a stick at.
It most definitely deserves to win this award.
Congratulations Top Of The Pops!
And, as I said last year: "TV executives: Give us more international Chart Shows!!!"

The Official Chart Hitz NZ Chart:
Best Music Related TV Show

Select/Select LateAs previously mentioned, TV4 was transformed into C4 this year which resulted in Most Wanted being given the flick in favour of the new txt-in format offered by Select/Select Late.  Really, Select/Select Late is just a continuation of Most Wanted, except instead of phoning an 0900 number or emailing your requests you simply txt them in with the Select code (currently costs 20¢ per txt.)
  1. Select/Select Late (C4)
  2. Coca-Cola New Releases (TV2)
  3. Most Wanted (TV3/TV4)

The Official Chart Hitz NZ Chart:
Best Concert/Performance (Within New Zealand)

Atomic KittenNaturally the Kittens were almost a dead cert here as they timed their visit only a couple of weeks before this was published which meant that their performance was fresh in their fans minds.  However, The Edge Summer Jam nearly managed to steal the crown as there was only a tiny majority in the Kittens favour.
  1. Atomic Kitten
  2. The Edge Summer Jam - Various Artists
  3. Zed

The Official Chart Hitz NZ Chart:
Best Newcomer

Clay AikenThe hours of endless hoopla certainly helped the American Idol 2 runner-up take out this category.  If you managed to sit through the entire series, then you should be congratulated.  Give yourself a pat on the back.
Clay Aiken was the winner by a country mile in this category.
  1. Clay Aiken
  2. Delta Goodrem
  3. Busted

The Official Chart Hitz NZ Chart:
Best Comeback
(NEW CATEGORY)

The Black Eyed PeasThis year The Black Eyed Peas released their best album so far.  'Elephunk' is the Peas third album and the first to feature their new line-up.
Dido made a somewhat subdued comeback this year as she had to live up to her hugely successful debut album 'No Angel.'  While I wouldn't say she's enjoyed the same level of success with 'Life For Rent', she has still done extremely well.
  1. The Black Eyed Peas
  2. Dido
  3. Christina Aguilera

The Official Chart Hitz NZ Chart:
Best New Zealand Artist/Group

ZedZed have managed to retain the title of 'Best New Zealand Artist/Group' for the second year in a row.  The boys returned from their international promotion after recording their new album ('This Little Empire') in the U.S.A.
The shining light on the New Zealand music horizon this year would have to be Brooke Fraser as she dished up her amazing debut album 'What To Do With Daylight.'  With two hits already under her belt ("Lifeline" being a number one), we look forward to several more releases from 'What To Do With Daylight' in 2004.
  1. Zed
  2. Brooke Fraser
  3. Blindspott

The Official Chart Hitz NZ Chart:
Best Overall Artist/Group

Clay AikenNo surprises here as Clay Aiken's fanbase flexes its muscles once again to make him the 'Best Overall Artist/Group.'
The biggest surprise comes from Christina Aguilera as she manages to take out the number two spot despite her sometimes raunchy, sometimes sweet releases.  She certainly managed to rock the boat in the U.S.A. but New Zealanders seem to have lapped it up.
  1. Clay Aiken
  2. Christina Aguilera
  3. Good Charlotte

The Official Chart Hitz NZ Chart:
Best Album - New Zealand

This Little Empire - ZED'This Little Empire' was always destined to be another hit record for Zed as it followed on in the footsteps of their debut 'Silencer' while allowing them to freely experiment ever-so-slightly with the formula which had put them on top in the first place.  Two hit singles down and now we look at how many more can be extracted from 'This Little Empire.'  If it is anything like 'Silencer', then expect this album to be around next Christmas as well.
  1. This Little Empire - ZED
  2. What To Do With Daylight - BROOKE FRASER
  3. The Crusader - SCRIBE

The Official Chart Hitz NZ Chart:
Best Album - International

Measure Of A Man - CLAY AIKENThis is Clay Aiken's third award.  Clay has far outdone American Idol 2 winner Ruben Studdard in terms of media coverage since the final of the show.  Not surprisingly, Aiken has been rewarded by his fans with two successful singles to boot.
  1. Measure Of A Man - CLAY AIKEN
  2. Stripped - CHRISTINA AGUILERA
  3. Guilty - BLUE

The Official Chart Hitz NZ Chart:
Best Overall Compilation Album (By Series)
(NEW CATEGORY)

Now That's What I Call MusicThis was a suprise victory for the NOW series.  It marginally beat the Nature's Best series to the top spot despite the latest releases of NOW being riddled with Copy-Control technology (aka. DRM or Digital Rights Management.)  Of course it is easy to side-step the Copy-Control technology on the NOW discs, but it is still an extra step that we previously didn't have to do to enjoy the music that we paid good money for.
  1. Now That's What I Call Music
  2. Nature's Best
  3. Unleashed

The Official Chart Hitz NZ Chart:
Worst Overall Song
(NEW CATEGORY)

P.I.M.P. - 50 CENT feat. SNOOP DOGGDespite his hugely popular album 'Get Rich Or Die Tryin'', 50 Cent seems to have an equally large group of people that dislike his music.
Poor old Australian Idol Guy Sebastian already seems to be disliked by a large number of our members as his debut single "Angels Brought Me Here" is starting to tumble down the Top 50 after only several weeks in the chart.
Even though "The Ketchup Song (Asereje)" was dying out in the first few months of this year, Las Ketchup still mangaged to rate quite highly in this category.  It's obvious that the phrase "once an annoying song, always an annoying song" is true.
  1. P.I.M.P. - 50 CENT feat. SNOOP DOGG
  2. Angels Brought Me Here - GUY SEBASTIAN
  3. The Ketchup Song (Asereje) - LAS KETCHUP

The Official Chart Hitz NZ Chart:
Worst Overall Artist/Group
(NEW CATEGORY)

Britney SpearsLast year I thought Britney Spears had hit rock bottom but apparantly not.  2003 was an even worse year for her as she launched her new album 'In The Zone' and the awful "Me Against The Music (feat. Madonna)."
Meanwhile American Idol 2 winner Ruben Studdard seems to have been given the boot by the New Zealand public already - and that's after only one single released.  Reality TV has hit a new low.
  1. Britney Spears
  2. Ruben Studdard
  3. 50 Cent

The Official Chart Hitz NZ Chart:
Worst Overall Album/Compilation Album (By Series)
(NEW CATEGORY)

In The Zone - BRITNEY SPEARSNot surprisingly, Britney Spears takes out the 'Worst Overall Album.'  'In The Zone' should have never been released and she should have quit before the release of her prior album 'Britney.'
It looks like Britney Spears is already having a negative effect on Madonna's career.  Madonna's appearance on Britney's "Me Against The Music" was a sure sign that either it would save Britney's career or sink Madonna's.  At the moment it is looking like the latter is the case.
  1. In The Zone - BRITENY SPEARS
  2. Ladies Night - ATOMIC KITTEN
  3. American Life - MADONNA

Chart Hitz NZ Commentary:

Firstly, let's look back at how we did with our predictions for 2003.
Christina Aguilera's return to form - Christina has well and truly won the battle against Britney Spears.  Her biggest enemy now is herself as she could easily destroy her career if she launches too many more raunchy tracks.
A bigger and better Rumba - It kind of happened.  Sure they got P!NK to it but she didn't perform so it is debatable whether it was better.
Yet even more Kiwi music making the Top 50 - 2003 was another great year for Kiwi music with the quality of local music improving all the time.  Our stand-out artist of the year would have to be Brooke Fraser.
More local acts going international - The Datsuns made it big in the U.K. and Zed had a crack at the U.S.A. plus a few others but 2004 should be a better year for international releases by local artists.
Another full year of Chart Hitz New Zealand charts - We're still here aren't we? - Even after RIANZ took our site down.

Songs that deserve an honourable mention:
Leave The Light On - BETH HART - It was a shame that this single was largely overlooked by the NZ radio stations.  This is certainly one powerful song and with Beth Hart visiting New Zealand to launch the single it should have been a shoe-in.  Proceeds from the single went to charity.
Damaged - TLC - With the loss of Lisa 'Left-Eye' Lopes, this was one of TLC's last singles to be released before their Greatest Hits album.  While it did make it to the Top 20, it didn't have widespread support and so faded fast.  This was one of TLC's better singles of late.
Baby Boy - BIG BROVAZ - Now this is one smooth song.  For some reason it didn't strike the right chord with the public and spent only one week inside the Top 50 (at number 49.)  Even the novelty video was nice as it mimicked TV show Friends.

In 2004 look out for:
  • A legal download service for New Zealanders that actually has a decent range of songs.
  • Justin Timberlake becoming an even bigger star.
  • Ronan Keating's return to form.
  • Anika Moa making her return.
  • Lawsuits from RIANZ against individuals using P2P services.
  • A new-look Chart Hitz New Zealand website.
Well, that's it for another fun-filled year of chart action.  Hopefully I'll see you back here in 2004.
Enjoy New Years and have a safe and happy holiday.

Best wishes,
Stephen Heighway,
